Content note: This email and episode discuss death, grief, alcohol use after loss, and the death of my son Dylan.
We try to measure grief from the outside. We look at whether someone cries, goes back to work, laughs, dates again, travels, or builds something new, then make decisions about how much they must have loved the person who died.
This episode is personal. I talk about how differently I responded when my father died and when Dylan died thirteen years later. I talk about Destin, what it means to continue mothering both of my sons in different ways, and the ordinary parts of love that keep running into absence.
I live completely okay. I love my life, and I would change one enormous thing about it immediately if I could. Both are true.
